GRE Scores - Determine How Good Your Score Is

Students are often confused about how to interpret GRE Scores. Common questions include: "What is a good GRE Score?" and "What GRE Scores do colleges require?" To answer these questions, it is important to understand the different components of the GRE Test and how GRE test scores are calculated.

The GRE Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections are scored on a scale of 200-800, with 10 point increments. The GRE Analytical Writing section is scored on a 0-6 scale with half-point increments. Your scores on the Verbal and Quantitative sections are based on your performance on the questions you were given and on the total number of questions answered in the time allotted.

The verbal and quantitative portions of the GRE Test are administered in a "computer-adaptive testing" (CAT) format. The CAT format adapts the difficulty of the questions based on how a user answers the questions. An average level question is given first, and then more difficult questions are given if the first question is answered correctly, or easier questions are given is the first question is missed. The intent of the CAT approach is to adapt the questions based on the user's aptitude. With the CAT approach, you are not allowed to go back and change answers to previous questions, and you must answer each question to proceed.

Interpreting your GRE Scores

The best way to understand your GRE TestScores is by comparing them to other students and seeing what your preferred colleges require. The information below summarizes your percentile compared to other students. For example, if you scored a 600 on your GRE Verbal Reasoning score, this implies that your percentile score is 85 (i.e., you scored better than 85% of the other students who took the GRE Test). For students who took the exam between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2007, the average (mean) GRE Scores were 462 for Verbal Reasoning, 584 for Quantitative Reasoning and 4.0 for Analytical Writing.

Raising your score on the ACT test is a critical part of qualifying for scholarships so that you can afford the college of your choice. However, it is not as simple as just studying more or working harder to raise your ACT test score.

The answer to how to raise your ACT test score to get scholarships lies in mastering the test instead of just studying the subjects. The key is not in the English, Math, Reading and Science knowledge. Most students who take the test are proficient enough in these subjects to get a higher score than they are getting.

Since knowledge of the subject matter isn't the key, then what is the way to master the test? There are three specifics areas of test taking skills to master in order to raise your ACT test score to qualify for more scholarships.

1) Time management is the first aspect that must be considered in order to improve your test taking skills. Many students lose a lot of points on the test merely because they run out of time. Time management is more than just watching the clock though.

2) The second aspect of raising your ACT score is learning how to answer questions quickly. For instance, on the Math test, it is not always necessary to know how to solve the problem in order to get the right score. Understanding "rounding" and "process of elimination" to rule out wrong answers helps you get questions right and save time as well.

3) Finally, you need to learn what areas to focus on in your studying in order to raise your ACT test score. Unless you are realistically aiming for a score of 31 or higher, for instance, studying Trigonometry is a waste of time, as there are only 4 Trig questions on the test. Additionally, by learning how to analyze your sub-scores on Math and English, you will save a lot of time studying just the right things.

With the right focus, that of studying smart instead of just working hard, it is possible to raise your ACT score significantly in order to qualify for scholarships. However, it takes focus and a strategy that is borne out of a very good understanding of the ACT test.

SAT Essays - How to Take a Stand

On the SAT, you may be asked to choose sides in an argument and defend your position.

Frequently, the essay prompt asks students whether they agree or disagree with a given quote or idea. For example, here's a real question from a previous SAT test:

"Nothing requires more discipline than freedom."

Assignment: In your essay, discuss your view of the statement above. Be sure to use examples to explain your view. Examples can be from literature, the arts, politics, history, science, experience, observation, or current events.

For the purposes of the essay, you should either agree or disagree with the given statement.

Many students are wishy-washy, perhaps because they are afraid of giving the wrong answer. For example, an indecisive student might write:

Sometimes freedom requires great discipline, but sometimes it doesn't.

This position statement is bad, because it does not take a clear and decisive stand. These kinds of openings tend to lead to essays that wander and are unfocused. They also tend to get low scores.

If you agree with the statement in the essay prompt, you might begin with a simple but effective affirmation of the idea, like this:

Freedom requires great discipline.

If you disagree with the statement, you might begin by turning the idea on its head:

Freedom is the absence of discipline.

Both of these statements make a clear point, and would lead to completely different essays, in part because they interpret the word freedom in radically different ways. The first approach might go on to discuss political freedom, while the second approach is likely to focus on personal freedom. Either argument could work as the launching point for a strong essay.

On the SAT essay, there is no "wrong" answer in the normal sense. If the essay is about the statement "crime doesn't pay," you may decide to argue that crime does pay. The judges aren't going to grade your opinions. Instead, they are looking at how well you can defend them.

In cases like this, you should either agree with the statement and defend your position, or disagree with the statement and defend your position.

Never try to argue both sides.

If you are reading all my articles on algebra then you should have gained good understanding of algebraic relations. Also, you know that how they originate from the word phrases in our daily lives.

In this article I will explain the difference between algebraic expressions and algebraic equations. You will learn that why algebra doesn't stop at algebraic expressions? Why do we need algebraic equations?

In my previous articles on algebra, while explaining algebraic relations, I anonymously introduced you with algebraic equations. But, in this article you will find out the clear difference between algebraic expressions and equations.

To understand the difference, let's review the following word phrases or sentences;

1. added to 25 times the number of lawns mowed by Arthur.

2. Arthur's earnings are added to 25 times number of lawns mowed by him.

3. Five times a number added to twenty.

4. Five times a number added to twenty is fifty.

Word phrases (sentences) number (1) and (2) are from my previous article. In word phrase number (1), "the added to 25 times number of lawns mowed by Arthur" there is only one variable which is, "number of lawns mowed". Consider we represent this variable by the letter "n"

So, the algebraic relation becomes, "60 + 25n"

In number (2) word phrase, there are two variables, earnings and number of lawns. Represent earnings by letter "e" and number of lawns by letter "n" again. The algebraic relation becomes,

e = 60 + 25n

Notice the difference between both the relations. One of them has equal sign used in it, and we call it an equation instead calling it algebraic expression as "equal" to "equate" and it becomes "equation."

The hint in the word phrase for the equation: The use of words "is" or "are" in word phrases give the indication of equations instead the algebraic expressions.

Now the solution to word phrases number (3) and (4) are given below;

3. Consider the number in the phrase is represented by letter "m", our unknown in the phrase and hence variable. The relation is given as;

5m + 20

No use of words "is" or "are" in the word phrase number (3), therefore no equal sign used in the relation. Hence, the relation is an algebraic expression.

4. In number four the relation is given below;

5m + 20 = 50

As the word "is" used in this word phrase, therefore equal is used in the relation. Hence the relation is an equation.

Equations are like a balance, having both sides equal to one another. Focus your mind to keep the balance of an equation all the times you work on them.

I hope that above explanation is enough to make all my readers understand the difference between algebraic expressions and equations.

In other words, it can be said that when there are variables involved in a relation but no equal sign is used the relation is algebraic expression and if an equal sign is used, the relation is an equation.

From here, we'll take two paths to explore algebra further. One path is exploring equations and the other is exploration of polynomials. So, stay tuned as more algebra is on its way.

When a student declares that he does not like mathematics, probably what he meant was that he is finding the teaching of algebra difficult. In schools and colleges, algebra is the core of mathematics manipulation. Any student that has a good grip in mathematics will tell you that the secret to doing well in mathematics is having a good understanding of algebraic concepts.

If you are a student or perhaps your child is finding mathematics difficult, the tips below could make understanding algebraic concepts a little easy. The words that are most associated with algebraic problems are: to solve, simplify and re-arrange equations and expressions.

Solving algebraic equations

This simply requires a student to obtain a value for a variable. Ideally you have to ensure that the single variable in question is made to stay on one side of the equation. The reason for this action is to make sure that numbers are collected together separately on one side while letters or variables are collected together on the other side to avoid things been mixed up. This is the first step to solving any algebraic equations.

Checking the signs

The next important thing is to check the signs associated to the numbers and variables. You have to Watch the 'equal' sign separating the expressions. Preferably it makes sense to have all the numbers on the right hand side of the 'equality' sign while the numbers containing the unknown variables or letters tidied up on the left hand side. Now carefully ensure that signs swapped as the numbers and variables swapped sides. For example if a negative variable is swapping side to the other side of the 'equality sign', it would become a positive variable instantly.

This approach is simply the fundaMental for understanding algebraic concepts and manipulation. I would rather suggest that you spend the time mastering this art of algebraic moves in order to be competent dealing with any future algebraic problems.

Simplifying algebraic expressions

This is one of the easy problems in algebra. Here attention is needed to collect same variables together. In mathematics collecting variables of the same kind is known as 'like terms'

It is crucial to look at the variables carefully for example quadratic variables are not the same as linear variables. In order words they are not like terms. Once you have identified the like terms, the next sTAGe is to check if the expression can be simplified any further.

There are cases where you have to factorise the expressions before simplifying. In such situation, try not to mix things up. Keep is tidy at all times. Let the beauty of mathematics stands out.

Re-arranging and manipulating algebraic expressions

This is the sTAGe to display your understanding of algebraic concepts. With your knowledge of signs checking and variable swapping, you will begin to enjoy the work of your hand. You will begin to make different variables subjects of formulae. At this sTAGe your competent in mathematics will begin to show.

You have got to open your mind and believe that you can truly do mathematics before you can go the extra mile in the subject. Patience is crucial in understanding mathematics. Don't settle for a quick fix. Trial and improveMent is the best approach. Don't quit just because you found it difficult first time. Mathematics is for the patient, wise and knowledgeable.
